This text describes how to apply for the Krzysztof Skubiszewski scholarship and/or research grant 2014. The scholarship and the research grant are described in this announcement.

How and when to apply

You can apply until April 7, 2014, by electronic mail to stypendia.studium@uw.edu.pl. A confirmation of receipt will be emailed to you. You cannot apply by paper mail.

If some documents that you want to send as part of your application cannot be attached to the e-mail message containing the application (for example, because the total size of your application and of all attached documents is too big), then you are invited to use one of the following methods:

  • a document can be sent in a separate e-mail message (if its size permits this);

  • a file too big to be sent by e-mail can be placed in Google Doc or on a HTTP or FTP server;

  • documents that are difficult to send in any electronic form (for example books that you wrote and that you desire to send as part of your application) can be sent on paper to the following postal address

    Studium Europy Wschodniej Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego
    Krakowskie Przedmieście 26/28
    00-927 Warszawa, Poland

Documents can be sent on paper only when sending them electronically is highly inconvenient. In practice, this will be the case only for books or long articles published on paper. Diplomas, recommendation letters and all other relatively short documents must be sent electronically.

The most important element of your application: the application form

The application form can be filled in English or in Polish. Use one of the following versions of the form:

While filling out the form, you can extend each of its sections as much as necessary to include all relevant information about you. The size of any individual section in the form is unlimited; you should, however, write in a concise manner, and the space taken by the whole form should not exceed three pages.

Section Foreign language proficiency: For each language that you can understand, please indicate your proficiency level, according to the scale from A1 to C2 used by the Council of Europe. Please list language proficiency certificates, if you hold any, and any information useful for assessing your level of proficiency (e.g., I published three research articles in English).

Section Major achievements in the academic field should describe your academic work in a concise manner.

Section Other information at the end of the form should contain all information that does not belong to other sections, yet should be taken into account during the assessment of your application (e.g., information about you effective social or political activities; an unusually positive recommendation by your academic supervisor or by another person).

Documents to include in the application (in addition to the form)

  1. A curriculum vitae in English or in Polish
  2. A letter describing your motivation and the proposed program of research to be undertaken during your internship or your academic visit. If you apply both for a scholarship and for a research grant, then you should indicate separately what program you want to undertake if you receive the scholarship, and what — if you receive a grant.
  3. Copies of academic diplomas and, when appropriate, documents substantiating your works performed in the public interest, your social or political activities, your professional experience or your experience in the public service.
  4. A list of publications, opinions and other works demonstrating your academic and professional achievements. Copies of the most important works. The list of academic publications should be written with clarity, and should follow rules commonly accepted for documents of this kind; among others, for each work mentioned, the list should contain the title in the original language and describe precisely where the work was published.
  5. Certificates confirming proficiency in foreign languages, if you hold such certificates.
  6. A letter of recommendation from your academic supervisor, a person to whom you report in your work or another person who can confirm your level of preparedness for the internship or the academic visit. It is advisable to attach additional letters of recommendation and names and contact information of persons from whom the Foundation may request an opinion about you.
  7. You may attach other documents useful in evaluating your application.
